Artist Statement: At what point does introversion become unhealthy? What factors lead to extreme introversion? What does introversion look like? How does extreme introversion damage the psyche? Through my sustained investigation I explored the concept of introversion and its effect on my own life. A motif of a ghost is present in many artworks; symbolic of an inability to fully ground oneself in social settings. By exaggerating traits of harmless introversion, I was able to pinpoint unhealthy habits that I exhibit, as well as better understand the fine line between mere introversion and social withdrawal.

Artist Statement: How does color relate to emotion? I was inspired by emotions and how they are so commonly conveyed through different colors. I wanted to convey each emotion through three different artworks but incorporate the same colors into all of them so there would be a clear overlap that related each piece to the next. For these pieces I explored the emotion of stress and how it is found in many aspects of my life: everyday tasks, social media, and school. As I explored the colors I wanted to, I found myself creating lines for each emotion as well. I used purple as I felt that stress was a dark emotion, and straight heavy lines that felt enclosing.Through each pen stroke I felt that portraying the emotion through both color and line was more powerful for expressing the feeling I wanted to represent. I think that emotions are so easily associated with colors that I thought it would be more interesting to look further into it by incorporating line and the same elements in all of my pieces for each emotion.

Description: This piece is semi part of my series. This conveys the emotion of happiness as I drew it thinking of my mother. I wanted to include the color yellow, but I decided it was more important to me to make the piece really about her. The purple and the butterflies represent her because she loves butterflies, and also has Lupus. I wanted to incorporate the same line work I did in my last pieces so instead of restricting straight lines I used wavy smooth lines because happiness is not rigid.

Artist Statement: "How do reflective objects show human emotions, feelings, and actions?" People tend to turn towards certain objects based on their emotion. You can overlook the true meaning and feelings that can be portrayed through the object that someone is either holding or using. I focused on different objects that are popular among different age groups that capture a lot of emotion. Each one of them are intricately painted with each brushstroke having a purpose. Everything from the colors to the placement of things helps capture the true feeling that can be interpreted differently.

Artist Statement: Originally, I wanted to use realism to portray my cousin for who he is. Working in a realistic style allows me to be able to recreate what I see including using value to emphasize the light and shadow of the human form. Part of portraiture is perfecting the structure of the face and body, and in turn, creates expression which conveys the emotion and message of the work. I began incorporating collage, watercolor paint, and acrylic to emphasize his different characteristics with each age. As he grew up, the style changes from realism to more illustrative to show the development of our friendship.

Artist Statement: What is the relationship between pets and their owners and how do I portray their comfort place? Throughout my series I focused on showing how pets can provide comfort, companionship, and unconditional love to their owners. By further exploring this connection, I have also discovered that pets are equally comforted by their owners, and seek comfort in their peers and surroundings too. However, due to it being so late, their body is doing whatever it takes for them to go to sleep, even if they aren’t in bed. Artist Statement: How does anatomy relate to human emotions, feelings, and actions? In my series, I showed how different anatomical structures and elements relate back to specific emotions such as lungs and anxiety, the brain and creativity, the heart and love, and the pelvis and freedom. I used mixed media to develop color schemes, line work and textures to further illustrate these connections.

Description: Throughout my series, I used acrylic paint but also experimented with different application methods and combinations of media. I wanted to challenge myself to try new things while making the strong connections between emotion and their corresponding anatomical structure. I layered oil pastels to add more depth to the vibrating brain to show the creative impulse. In my later works, I began to use collage to emphasize the cause of the emotions such as surrounding lungs with symbols that relate to anxiety from the pressures of school.

Artist Statement: The question that led my investigation revolves around “If you grow up surrounded by trauma how does it grow with you and where do you put it all own when it gets too hard to carry?” Trauma can be apparent in different ways as we grow as individuals. It can impact our perception of the world and one’s self. Focusing on the development of a person growing up with trauma, they don’t understand yet themselves shows how unsettling and isolating it can be to go through something so complex that it affects your physical and emotional well being.

Artist Statement: How are living things connected through life and death? In the beginning of my series, I focused specifically on how animals and humans are similar by creating connections between their life cycles such as painting a human baby and lamb sharing a womb. I then realized that living things can also include plants and began to include mushrooms, vines, and other vegetation to demonstrate growth. My series finally became an investigation into how the cycle of life connects living beings from humans to animals to plants.
